RPEA | California’s Voice for Public Employees and Retirees
We are active and retired California public employees working together to protect what we have earned and strengthen the future for those who follow. We advocate for secure pensions, quality healthcare, financial security, and transparency and accountability in the decisions that affect public employees and retirees.
Who We Are
RPEA is a nonprofit association representing more than 25,000 active and retired public employees through 67 active chapters in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oregon.
Since 1958, RPEA has worked to protect and strengthen the pensions, healthcare, workplace protections, and other benefits earned through public service.
Active public employees do not need to be CalPERS members or expect to receive a CalPERS pension to join RPEA. We advocate for active employees throughout public service, while continuing our longstanding role as the only statewide association representing all CalPERS retirees and beneficiaries.
Together, state, classified school, public agency, and special district employees and retirees form a strong, independent, and unified voice.
What We Do
- We advocate for active public employees and retirees. RPEA represents our members at CalPERS, the State Capitol, and in Congress, supporting policies that protect public employees, earned benefits, and retirement security.
- We are your watchdog at CalPERS. RPEA closely monitors the CalPERS Board of Administration and its committees, provides public comment, and speaks out on decisions affecting active employees, retirees, pensions, healthcare, and the security of the retirement system.
- We demand transparency and accountability. We scrutinize investment performance and risk, private equity and private debt, governance practices, executive compensation, bonuses, and other decisions involving billions of dollars in public pension assets. When greater scrutiny is needed, RPEA asks tough questions and demands answers.
- We protect the benefits earned through public service. RPEA works to protect and strengthen pensions, healthcare, Social Security, and other benefits important to active employees, retirees, and their families.
- We advocate beyond pensions. RPEA addresses issues affecting public employees and retirees, including healthcare affordability, financial security, elder financial abuse, fraud, and consumer protection.
- We keep members informed and connected. Members receive legislative, CalPERS, healthcare, Social Security, and advocacy updates through local chapters, educational programs, meetings, webinars, community outreach, and the RPEA magazine.
